Homework Policy

4th Grade Homework Policy
Edna Maguire School

Mill Valley School District guidelines state that 4th grade homework may include nightly reading and up to 40 minutes of additional assignments each night.

Homework may vary from teacher to teacher. In general, homework is designed to develop foundational skills. Students may be asked to read nightly, practice math facts or spelling, and complete homework related to major projects occurring throughout the year.

The California state learning standards determine learning outcomes for all students. However, teachers employ creative freedom in choosing and designing curriculum, as well as developing a homework structure for their class. This diversity of approach within the outcomes defined by the learning standards is one of the great strengths of our school and district. It is one of the keys to our students’ outstanding academic performance.

Teachers may vary in their approaches to homework, or even particular lessons within a learning standard. The Edna Maguire 4th grade team works closely together and with their district 4th grade teammates in designing the overarching teaching and learning program and in setting common expectations for student learning outcomes.
